The term stationary is and has been used in many areas of the code but it wasn’t until NEC 2023 that the term found its way in to Article 100. This new defined term only applies to Article 680, Swimming Pools, Fountains, and Similar Installations. NEC 2023 tells us that the term “Stationary” as it applies to equipment is when equipment is not moved from one place to another in normal use.
Some areas of Article 680 where this term is used include the following two examples:
680.56 Cord-and-Plug-Connected Equipment.
This section specifically addresses cord-and-plug connected equipment with four first-level subdivisions that address (A) GFCI Protection, (B) Cord type, (C) Sealing, and (D) Terminations. It may be assumed that cord-and-plug-connected equipment is all portable and none are stationary but that would be incorrect. Section which focuses on (D) Terminations includes requirements that address connections with flexible cords, requiring them to be permanent, except that grounding-type attachment plugs and receptacles must be permitted to facilitate removal or disconnection for maintenance, repair, or storage of fixed or stationary equipment not located in any water-containing part of a fountain.
680.8 Cord-and-Plug-Connected Equipment.
This section specifically focuses on fixed or stationary equipment, other than underwater luminaires, for a permanently installed pool. The parent text tells the user of the code that these are permitted to be connected with a flexible cord and plug to facilitate the removal or disconnection for maintenance or repair. it also includes three first level subdivision requirements that covers (A) Length, (B) Equipment Grounding, and (C) Construction.
