Equipment

The 1940 edition of the electrical code included a definition of equipment that is very similar to the definition that we find as part of the 2023 edition. Let’s look at a comparison between the 1940 and 2023 editions:

1940 Definition of Equipment2023 Definition of Equipment

The definition has changed since 1940 but the fundamental is still in tact. One of the changes includes the removal of the term “Fixtures” because that term had been removed from the code to ultimately use the term “Luminaires”. here’s a review of some key differences between the 1940 edition of the code and the 2023 edition of the code.

The term equipment is used widely throughout the electrical code. When applying the requirements of the electrical code it is important to understand.

A motor is a good example of equipment. According to Article 100 of the electrical code, “equipment” refers to a general category of devices, apparatus, fixtures, and systems or parts thereof that are involved in distributing or controlling electrical energy. Motors fall under this definition as they are devices that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and are integral to many electrical systems.
